A conventional bale of Hay

We at Horlands Farm make our own hay from grass meadows on the farm.  Most of the hay we make is used as livestock feed for our animals.  We do however have some extra hay and straw which we can offer for sale.  We use a conventional baler to make rectangular bales that are held together with bale twine.

What is hay?

Hay is basically grass that is allowed to grow and set seeds.  It is then cut in the summer  months and dried by using the heat from the sun and wind.  When dry it is baled and transported indoor for storage.

What's hay used for?

Hay has for hundred of years been used for feeding animals in the winter when the fresh grass has run out.  It is eaten by Cattle, Sheep and Horses and can be used for as soft bedding for many pets such as Rabbits, Guinea Pigs etc.  If you would like to purchase some hay please contact us through sales@horlandsfarm.com

What is Straw?

Straw is the stalks of arable crops such as wheat, barley, oats etc.  It is more stiff than grass and is golden in colour.  It can be used for animal feed a but mostly for livestock bedding.  The straw we bale comes from a neighbouring arable farmer.

It has however got excellent absorbency, some people used bales of straw on ponds to keep the water clean.  It is also used for some green building projects as a good form of insulation.

If you would like to purchase some wheat straw please contact us through sales@horlandsfarm.com
